MARCH 11th, 2011 ♦ ALEXANDRA MASCOLO-DAVID "Interpretation and Phrasing Techniques for the Beginning and Intermediate Student" This lecture will include: Developing the Sound Quality, Grouping, Shaping of the Melodic Line/Phrasing, Direction/Forward Motion, Balance Between the Hands, Precision of Articulations/Touch, Fingering, Pedaling, and Extra-Musical Ideas. APRIL 15th, 2011 ♦ DR LIA JANSEN-ABBOTT "Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel's 'Das Jahr': A Semiotic Performance and Teaching Analysis" This session will explore historical, theoretical, technical, and musical issues demonstrated by performed examples. The principles of semiotics will then be applied to help create a pedagogical/performance blueprint of the work (an intellectual plan for making musical decisions and how to execute them at the highest level). The field of semiotics (literally, the study of signs and symbolism as they relate to gesture) can help guide teachers and performers of any level of musical difficulty. What makes the presentation unique is the illustration of these techniques through a little-known concert work by a female composer. Many teachers already use semiotics but don’t know it. This session will contextualize the various strategies of a semiotic teaching approach through the perspective of Das Jahr.
MAY 13th, 2011 ♦ WINNERS RECITAL This event features performances by the winners of the Awards Competition and the Scholarship Competition.
